The Full-Day Coaching Experience “Emerging Leaders,” in collaboration with Detecon Schweiz AG, a leading management and technology consultancy, offered seven participants a unique opportunity to explore their leadership style and communication skills through horse-assisted coaching. From young professionals to senior managers, each participant had the chance to reflect on and enhance their leadership competencies.
The Participants
Growing as and into a leader
Seven consultants from various career levels – ranging from business analysts to senior managers, including roles such as project leads and team managers – came together for the Emerging Leaders coaching experience. While each participant brought their own individual questions and challenges, the overarching goal was the same: growth.
For some, it was the first step in discovering their personal leadership style, aiming to stay authentic while being effective in their leadership role. Others, with prior leadership experience, used the day to reflect on their existing approach and gain fresh perspectives for further development.
The key themes of the coaching revolved around essential questions:
- How do I find my own leadership style?
- How can I develop clear, motivating communication while inspiring my team?
- Where do I currently stand in my leadership role, and how can I improve?
THE PROCESS
From self to team
No lengthy lectures on leadership models, no endless PowerPoint slides. Instead: hands-on experience, trial and error, and practical implementation. Horse-assisted coaching is about making leadership tangible – from “me as a leader” to leading within a team.
The day began with introductions – both human and equine. In the first simple exercise, where participants led the horses individually, initial leadership styles became visible. These early observations laid the foundation for reflection and development throughout the day.
Next, the group collaboratively built a creative obstacle course for the horses. It quickly became clear: leadership means realistically assessing team strengths and weaknesses – requiring keen perception and clear goal setting. What the horses couldn’t do mirrored what may also be challenging within a team.
The next challenge focused on teamwork and non-verbal communication. Blindfolded team members had to be guided through the course without verbal instructions, highlighting the importance of clear communication and trust-building as a leader.
After each exercise, participants reflected on their performance: Where do I stand as a leader? What can I improve? How can I apply this immediately? This continuous cycle of practice, reflection, and adjustment enabled significant progress within a short time.
The conclusion
A day of insights
By the end of the day, participants agreed that the experience provided valuable insights. Away from daily tasks and projects, the focus on communication – particularly non-verbal communication – was sharpened. Notebooks were filled with reflections, and as the follow-up discussions revealed, the exercises inspired further thought and personal growth.
As one participant aptly put it: “Just because you think a horse can jump doesn’t mean it will.”
